Students and staff have been revealing what ‘delights’ give them the most pleasure in life as part of World Book Day celebrations. Everyone at Concord is reading extracts from the book ‘Modern Delight,’ to which a number of authors have contributed, to give them inspiration. The book has been chosen for students and staff at Concord by librarian Anne Williams and Head of English Phil Woods as part of ‘World Book Day’ which is took place on Thursday 4th March. Writers from Stephen Fry and Michael Palin to Kate Mosse and Sue Townsend have put into words the things that delight and give them pleasure. “We have all got to write down something that gives us pleasure,” said Head of English Phil Woods. “We don’t often take the time to think about the everyday things which bring us delight. The World Book Day event has provided the perfect opportunity. “From the wise to the wacky, Concord students clearly enjoy a whole world of delights,” he added. The student librarians were amongst the first to share their ideas. For Russell Yuldashev (6.1), delight means to wake up in the morning full of energy and then to go bed realising he has done something useful. A delight of Dovile Antusaite (6.2) is spending a day with her horse Rolling Stone, while Piera Dencker Rasmussen (6.1) admits: “To me, delight is lying in bed listening to the rain…” Lynus Lim (6.1) said delight for him was to feel alive and lively everyday, while James Clifford (6.1) confessed: “Being able to listen to my music in the car on the way to college.” The ideas will then be made into a ‘path of delights’ display along the main corridor by the library. Avid readers at Concord are also looking forward to the visit of author Paul Dowswell who will be visiting the college later this term to talk about his new book, Auslander.
